ALL BUSINESSES IN AUSTRALIA HAVE TO PROVIDE A SAFE WORKPLACE FOR ALL EMPLOYEES, VISITORS & CONTRACTORS. UNITS COVERED ARE PROVIDE ADVANCED FIRST AID –HLTAID006, PROVIDE ADVANCED RESUSCITATION –HLTAID007, MANAGE FIRST AID SERVICES AND FACILITIES –HLTAID008. IT IS IDEAL FOR FIRST AIDERS REQUIRING A HIGHER LEVEL OF PREPAREDNESS IN ORDER TO ADEQUATELY HANDLE A WORKPLACE EMERGENCY UNTIL ARRIVAL OF THE AMBULANCE. IT ALSO PREPARES THE FIRST AIDER TO SKILLFULLY USE OXYGEN EQUIPMENT AND MANAGE THE FIRST AID ROOM.

Certificate valid:

3 years. This is specified by the Code of Practice–First Aid in the Workplace.

An annual update of resuscitation (CPR) skills is recommended by Australian Resuscitation Council and specified by the Code of Practice –First Aid in the Workplace.

Mode of Delivery:

Blended learning: Face-to-face in classroom environment and pre-learning.

Duration:

Three days for face-to-face (approximately 24hours, including meal break).

Estimated time to complete pre-learning: 10to 16hours depending on student skill level. Workbook exercises and theory component of the assessment makes up the pre-course homework that is required to be completed prior to attending.

Assessments:

Written, practical and scenario-based assessments.

Who should attend:

This course covers skills and knowledge required to perform an emergency first aid response in a work setting in line with the ARC (Australian Resuscitation Council) guidelines. This skill set has been endorsed by industry as appropriate for people who are either employed in, or intending to become employed in, nominated occupational first aider roles.

All businesses in Australia have to provide a safe workplace for all employees, visitors & contractors. Units covered are HLTAID006 Provide advanced first aid, HLTAID007 Provide advanced resuscitation and HLTAID008 Manage first aid services and resources – it is ideal for first aiders requiring a higher level of preparedness in order to adequately handle a workplace emergency until arrival of the ambulance. It also prepares the first aider to skillfully use oxygen equipment and manage the first aid room.

Prerequisites:

Although there are no prerequisites for undertaking this course, please note that all pre-course homework must be completed prior to attending.

Note that the Learner will need to meet the required ACSF levels and Foundation Skills requirements to successfully complete the course.

It is important to note that the HLTAID competency standards do require a level of physical ability to meet the evidence requirements for assessment. Due to the potential risk to health and safety it is important to note that learners must be able to perform at least 4minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor. These standards relate to the level of performance required to provide resuscitation and respond to an emergency situation where there may be risk to life.

HLTAID006 Provide advanced first aid;

Elements:

Respond to an Emergency Situation;

  • Recognise an emergency situation.
  • Identify, assess and manage immediate hazards to health and safety of self and others.
  • Assess the casualty and recognise the need for first aid response.
  • Assess the situation and seek assistance from emergency response services.
  • Deploy resources to appropriate locations as required in line with workplace procedures.

Apply Appropriate First Aid Procedures;

  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
  • Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles.
  • Display respectful behaviour towards a casualty.
  • Obtain consent from a casualty where possible.
  • Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible.
  • Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Monitor the casualty’s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles.

Coordinate First Aid Activities until Arrival of Medical Assistance;

  • Identify available resources required and establish communication links with appropriate personnel, emergency management services and medical assistance as appropriate.
  • Deploy correct amount of required resources to appropriate locations in an effective manner to ensure timely arrival.
  • Document the provision of resources and recommend modifications as required.
  • Monitor the condition of casualties in accordance with first aid principles and workplace procedures.
  • Coordinate evacuation of casualties according to relevant evacuation procedures.
  • Arrange support services for personnel involved in the incident in accordance with relevant principles and procedures.

Communicate Details of the Incident;

  • Accurately convey incident details to emergency response services.
  • Report details of incident in line with organisational policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies.

Evaluate the incident;

  • Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers involved in critical incidents.
  • Participate in debriefing to address individual needs.
  • Evaluate management of the incident and develop an action plan in consultation with relevant parties.
  • Review contingency planning to identify and select alternative management principles and procedures as required.

HLTAID007 Provide advanced resuscitation;

Elements:

Respond to an Emergency Situation;

  • Recognise an emergency situation.
  • Identify, assess and manage immediate hazards to health and safety of self and others.
  • Assess the casualty and recognise the need for advanced resuscitation response.
  • Assess the situation and seek assistance from emergency response services where required.

Perform Advanced Resuscitation;

  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with ARC guidelines.
  • Provide supplemental oxygen.
  • Display respectful behaviour towards casualty.
  • Obtain consent from casualty where possible.
  • Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible.
  • Monitor casualty condition and rectify issues preventing adequate treatment.

Coordinate Details of the Incident;

  • Accurately convey incident details to emergency response services.
  • Report details of incident in line with organisational policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies .

Evaluate the Incident and own performance;

  • Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers involved in critical incidents.
  • Participate in debriefing to address individual needs.
  • Check, maintain and clean equipment ready for future use.

HLTAID008 Manage first aid services and resources;

Elements:

Determine Workplace First Aid Requirements;

  • Identify workplace hazards and assess associated risks as a basis for determining first aid resource requirements.
  • Identify first aid equipment, resources and personnel required to address workplace requirements.
  • Develop first aid action plans in consultation with relevant parties.
  • Provide information to encourage risk minimization and enable access to first aid facilities.

Establish and Maintain Workplace First Aid Facilities;

  • Monitor and maintain availability of first aid equipment, resources and personnel to support workplace first aid response.
  • Conduct regular inspections of stock and equipment to ensure currency and operational readiness in line with workplace requirements.
  • Ensure equipment is recovered and reprocessed and that waste is disposed of safely according to legislative and workplace procedures.
  • Ensure equipment and resources are stored and maintained in line with relevant legislation and manufacturer’s/supplier’s instructions.
  • Deploy appropriate equipment, resources and personnel to ensure timely and effective first aid response in line with workplace requirements.

Maintain Workplace First Aid Records;

  • Ensure documentation is completed as required according to legislation and workplace procedures.
  • Maintain first aid records in line with legislative requirements and workplace security practices.
  • Send relevant documents to appropriate bodies in line with workplace and legislative requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies.

Review the Provision of First Aid in the Workplace;

  • Participate in debriefing/evaluation to improve future operations and address individual needs.
  • Evaluate management of workplace first aid incidents in relation to required resources, personnel, current organisational procedures and individual first aid action plans.
  • Contribute to the review of workplace policies and procedures in accordance with risk assessment and evaluation of first aid provision.
